A4, A3 or A2? A Poetry Print Size and Frame Guide

A4 measures 21 × 29.7 cm, A3 measures 29.7 × 42 cm, and A2 measures 42 × 59.4 cm. Those are paper dimensions. The finished outside size will be larger when a mount and frame are added, so check the complete configuration before measuring your wall.

For poetry, size affects more than the amount of wall you cover. It also changes how easily someone can read the words from the place where they usually sit or stand.

Compare the paper sizes first

Lafz prints come in A4 and A3. A Lafz frame adds 2 cm on each side with no mount, so a framed A4 measures 25 × 33.7 cm and a framed A3 measures 33.7 × 46 cm. A2 is included above for comparison only.

The dimensions are documented in HP's paper-size reference. The placement suggestions are starting points, not rules. A small print may feel right in a large room if it is meant to be approached and read closely.

Each step up the A series roughly doubles the sheet's area. It does not double both its width and height. If you are comparing thumbnails, look at the measurements rather than assuming that A2 is only a little larger than A3.

Separate paper size from frame size

There are several measurements worth distinguishing: the paper, the visible artwork area, the frame's fitting size and its outside dimensions. A mount can surround the paper, and the frame's outer edge adds more width.

For an illustrative example, imagine an A3 sheet with a 4 cm mount on every side and a 2 cm-wide frame outside that. The outside dimensions would be approximately 41.7 × 54 cm: add 12 cm to the paper's width and height. This is a simplified measurement example, not a LAFZ product specification. Real fitting overlaps and frame profiles can affect the result.

When using a frame you already own, check the space it is designed to fit. An outside measurement alone does not establish that an A3 sheet will fit inside it.

Use a paper mock-up in the room

Mark the proposed outside dimensions with removable tape, or cut a paper rectangle. Leave it in place long enough to see the wall in daylight and evening light.

Then check it from the doorway, from the nearest chair and at a comfortable reading distance. Notice nearby switches, shelves and furniture. If the print is part of a group, mark all the frames and gaps together instead of assessing one rectangle in isolation.

For poetry, also open the full artwork preview and examine how much of the page the lettering occupies. Two A3 designs can have very different apparent text sizes. Buying a larger sheet does not help if the chosen layout still uses very small letters.

Choose the frame as part of the composition

A black frame can emphasise contrast. A pale wood finish may connect with light furniture. A darker walnut finish can add warmth beside cream paper or linen. Compare the frame against both the artwork and the room.

Finish names do not establish the underlying material. Check the listing for frame construction, glazing, mount details, hanging fittings and outside dimensions. If you are buying unframed, include a compatible frame and its cost in your plan.

Is A3 a good size for a poetry print?

A3 can be a useful middle option, but the layout, reading distance and wall space matter. Test its finished framed dimensions before deciding.

Will A4 fit an 8 × 12 inch frame?

Not exactly as a direct paper-size match. A4 is approximately 8.27 × 11.69 inches. Check the frame's fitting size and mount opening rather than relying on a nearby nominal size.

Should I choose A2 for a living room?

Consider it if you want a larger focal point or will view it from farther away. Measure the complete frame and check the artwork's text size; room type alone does not determine the right format.
